Why spend time blogging?
56If you ask, don't start a blog !
When I saw the hub request "Why spend time blogging ?", it left me with a strange feeling...
Not that I think that anyone should run a blog, but because I see only one answer to someone asking: money !
My point is that someone not naturally attracted in writing and sharing his own experiences will never ever think about blogging, except by thinking this can generate easy money.
It's A Lot Of Work
As I already told about in my "On Blogging And Money" hub, I've been a serious blogger for about one year now, and I can confirm that it is lot of work. Building an audience and credibility needs consistency, dedication, and a good sense of details.
Call me naive, but my view is that traffic, money and popularity are just by-products of the passion of writing and sharing. I don't say it comes automatically, but an author liking what he talks about is certainly a need for a successful blog.
Why I (Me, Personally, Myself,) Spend Time Blogging
- Because I like it
- To share my views and experiences
- To get in touch with other interesting persons
- For the pleasure of writing
- To create some debates
- And to possibly make some money (secondary goal only !)

Do you run a blog and ask yourself why ? Do you think about starting one, but are not sure ? Was just the title of this hub interesting enough so you read it ? Do you think blogging in wasting time ?

Same reasons I have . :-) It's fun, takes up time from boredom, to write, traffic to hubs and other online articles, and money on the side.
I used to write in a journal, but now one of my blogs takes over for that. I enjoy writing. If I didn't, I would never blog.
@lisaj66: if you do it for money, I think you can produce lot of crap content staffed with good keywords and generate tons of traffic. However such traffic will probably not be producing a lot of money on affiliate programs.
@Whitney05: Lucky you to have some boredom... I'd like to have much time to blog and write hubs !
@Stacie: by "journal", do you mean something public, or was it private ? I do some writing for myself only as a way to clarify ideas and deal with some personal stuff, but I wil never ever publish that, it is weel too personal.
I used to have a private journal, but now journal publicly on a blog. I do still have a real journal for private use, but am able to blog more often than write in it.

I don't consider myself a writer. In matter of fact I think I suck at it. I write a hub and re-edit the darned thing eight or ten times. Even then I'm not always happy with my wording.
Kurt Vonnegut Jr. once said there are two types of writers; slashers and bashers. A slasher dashes off a bunch of thoughts and goes back to edit once the core of the piece is complete. A basher agonizes over every word. I'm a combination of both I think.
No, I do this because I like to share information. I also like to write about topics I find personally exciting. Seeing that I haven't made any money as yet (been here two weeks) I'll have to say that's not a factor at all...at this point.
I think it's important that a hubber have some sort of passion about the subject, be able to write intelligently about it, and enjoy the interactions with the commentarians ;^)

I used to write blog just for fun. You know, to share jokes and experiences with my friend. But soon when I got enough traffic to my site I started making money. But just so everyone knows, I'll continue writting even if I don't make money out of it, it's what I like.
@Liam: I'm a slasher then, and I'm even so lazy that I review some posts only one time. I hope you will make a couple of dollars soon (I liked your MacBook Air review)

@apx: you will then raise a good old question: shall you add adverts to your blog when it starts getting traffic (which readers could feel as a negative change) or put ads from the very begining so they know it is part of your motivation, but also that you are not here for passion only. No universal answer.
Great question, I've ask that to myself too, if I put ads on my blog, wouldn't that make me seem like the main purpose of my blog is to earn money from the beginning? It's a ethical question, what I have to say though, which I think I'm saying for a lot of blogger out there, I'm doing this so I don't feel sorry for myself later. Knowing many that are making money out there, I feel that at least I could earn some money to cover the cost such as broadband connection perhaps, so I could do something I like and it could pay for itself. My point is putting up ads doesn't necessary means your motivation for blogging is not only for passion but to reinforce that passion. But that of course depend on people, some might think otherwise. With all respect though, I think your hub is very thought provoking and the comments are fantastic, if possible I would like to chat with you sometimes, I think it would be very interesting.
I think you may help society by raising some serious issues and compelling people to think over it. Its not easy for everyone to become a journalist but its really easy to become a blogger and here you have a chance to improve upon your article by editing them eight or ten times. For becoming journalist you have to devote your full time but you can do blogging with your sparetime. However, blogging becomes a passion over the time.
I started blogging in 2003 when I was healing from surgery. I still have the site too but now I use it to keep up with family and friends. I never really thought as blogging as a way of making money until about 3 months ago. It never occured to me that my hobby could generate an income. I find this whole thing fascinating! To find that I could have been moking money all this time!
To be fair, dotchianni, I don't know if so many money making tools were available in 2003.
You are correct. They were pretty absent back then. Wish I had them though. I could have made a living by now LOL

Great Hub. I agree that you have to love writing and your subject to be successful blogging. Otherwise you'll run out of steam long before you create enough content to capture an audience.
